How To / FAQ

Quick Start

You must have Java 6 (or better) installed on all computers.
If you are not sure, go to: http://www.java.com/download/  and click on "Free Java Download".

Pick one computer in your network to be the server. All other computers will be sending data to this computer so it should have a good size hard drive.
Install server on this computer. If you got the CD, simply insert the CD and install will start. If you downloaded the software, click on "server.msi" to start installation process. Install is simple and quick.

Once server is installed and your computer restarted Windows might prompt you to "Allow" or "Unblock" this program. You must "Allow" or "Unblock" ArchiveAndSearch-Server to continue.
By default ArchiveAndSearch-Server will start only after the user that installed it has logged in. If this is not satisfactory, see: "Can I Run ArchiveAndSearch-Server as Windows Service?"

On all other computers in your network install ArchiveAndSearch-Client. If you have a CD installation will start after you insert the CD. If you downloaded the software, click on "setup.msi". Installation is quick and no real configuration is necessary. After installation your home directory will be scheduled for backup.
Windows might prompt you to "Allow" or "Unblock" ArchiveAndSearch. You must allow this for backup to work.

  9. Can I connect more then 5 clients?

  10. How much space do I need for the archive server?
The amount of space depends on how much data you wish to archive. The amount of data in a home directory of a typical user can vary greatly. from a few gigabytes to several hundred gigabytes. It is up to you to pick a hard disk with enough space. While it is preferable to archive to internal hard disk, you can purchase relativelly cheap external USB drive, connect it to a computer that is designated as server and move your archive to a directory on that drive. Our recommendation is to have at least 50GB free on the server. If the designated directory for the archive get's full, you will have to move archive or delete some files. Ultimatelly you must ensure you have enough space to archive files from all your client computers.  Back to top

  11. What are minimal requirements for the client and the server?
ArchiveAndSearch - Server should be running on a computer with at least 256 MB of RAM and recomended 50GB of free space. ArchiveAndSearch - client can run with as little as 128 MB of RAM. Back to top
